La Salle Alum William Burns Named Deputy Secretary of State

La Salle University graduate William Burns, Jr. was recently sworn in as Deputy Secretary of State, a position just one spot below that of Secretary of State. In this capacity, he is responsible for foreign policy matters.

A 1978 graduate of La Salle, Burns was the first student in the University’s history to receive a Marshall Fellowship that enabled him to study at Oxford University, where he received his Master’s and Doctorate degrees. He joined the Foreign Service and became U.S. Ambassador to Jordan, Russia, and later Undersecretary for Political Affairs at the State Department.
