The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures is composed of a diverse and vibrant community of scholars and dedicated teachers in a number of fields. The Department houses a myriad of different programs that offer students a great number of possibilities within our area of study.
- For the undergraduate student, The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a major and a minor in Spanish. We offer elementary and intermediate language courses in French, Italian, German, and Russian. Committed to foreign language acquisition, the department has taught courses in the past and based on student demand, in Chinese, Celtic, Czech, Farsi, Polish, Portuguese, Serbo-Croatian, and Ukrainian. Every semester, the department also teaches various literature classes in English covering the works of foreign authors.
- The BUSCA program, which leads to an Associates’ degree, is located on two campuses. It serves to initiate Hispanic students into university studies through intensive courses in English.
- For the graduate student, the department offers a variety of interesting courses of study which will lead to one of three Master’s degrees or three certificates.
- In the Hispanic Institute, a student could follow a course of study that would lead to a Master’s degree of Bilingual/Bicultural Studies, a Master’s of Translation and Interpretation, a Master’s in TESOL, as well as a certificate in ESL, a certificate in Translation or a certificate in Interpretation.
As chair of La Salle University’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, I invite you to visit us on the Internet. The Department aims to expand the potential of all of our students by equipping them with a second and, for many, a third language. We recognize that although the world has grown smaller through globalization, those who are adept in additional languages are leaders of their chosen fields. Our curriculum offers rigorous preparation for the many careers that exist for multilingual graduates. We, the professors and students, work as a team to ensure that each graduate utilizes every opportunity to master his or her chosen language.
The Department’s faculty upholds globally recognized standards of academic excellence. Our professors are active researchers and publish books and articles on a regular basis. They are also active in local and national organizations that support and promote various linguistic communities. In the classroom, our faculty use well-honed teaching methods and the latest technology to provide the best learning experience for the students. We consistently produce graduates that have good control of the mandatory language skills of comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing the foreign language.
