Surrounded by his wife Nancy and children, Hugh Devlin, ’64 sadly passed on Nov. 21, 2019.

Since his graduation from La Salle in 1964, Devlin enjoyed a very successful career in finance working for Empire Trust and A.G. Becker and Company. Hugh served as a Managing Director for Morgan Stanley prior to becoming Co-Founder and Principal of Barr Devlin, a boutique investment firm specializing in the utility industry.

After retiring from his business career, Devlin, along with his wife, Nancy, were involved in a number of philanthropic causes that were important to them including medical research for cystic fibrosis and hydrocephalus along with educational initiatives at Chestnut Hill College and La Salle. Devlin was always ready to lead when La Salle University was prepared to grow. In 1994, Devlin endowed a full-tuition scholarship for a student from the Catholic schools of the Camden, N.J. to attend La Salle University. In the fall of 2000, Devlin offered to help the University build a major gift program. Working directly with University leadership, Devlin helped establish the Shoulder to Shoulder initiative. Serving as Chair of this initiative, Devlin set the example with the lead gift and helped raise more than $28 million in gifts and pledges. This enabled the University to renovate Holroyd Hall and establish the Hugh and Nancy Devlin Center for Science and Technology.

In 2007, Devlin was awarded the John J. Finley, ’24 Award, which is presented each year to alumni who have exhibited outstanding service and have made significant contributions to advance the mission of La Salle University and the Alumni Association.

Devlin’s vision for the University impacted generations of Explorers and inspired them to change the world for the better. The entire University mourns the loss of Hugh Devlin, for we are forever grateful for his support and lasting legacy.
