USA Basketball taps all-time women’s basketball alumna as new coach

La Salle women’s basketball alumna Cheryl Reeve, ’88, was named the U.S. women’s basketball national team head coach.

Reeve, the head coach and general manager of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, has 28 years of collegiate and professional coaching experience. She previously served as an assistant coach to the 2019-20 national team and helped to U.S. to gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a perfect 6-0 record.

Reeve played for the Explorers from 198488. She helped lead the nationally ranked Explorers to 25-5 record during the 1987-88 season resulting in another NCAA Tournament appearance. She ranks third in the record books for most games started (110) and sixth in career assists (420). During both the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons Reeve led the Explorers in assists averaging 3.2 per game and 9.2 per game, respectively. She broke the single-season assists record as a sophomore as the program earned its second trip to the NCAA Tournament. The four-year starter was inducted into La Salle Athletics’ Hall of Athletes in 2017.

Over the past 12 years as the Lynx head coach, Reeve has worked her way to an impressive 267-127 overall record. She has compiled a 41-21 playoff slate and has led her team to four WNBA Championships (2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016). Reeve has been named WNBA Coach of the year three times with the most recent coming in 2020. She was also named WNBA Basketball Executive of the year in 2019.
