Evelyn R. Klein, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL is a full professor at La Salle University in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders where she teaches, supervises, and advises students pursuing degrees in speech-language pathology. She holds professional licensures as a speech-language pathologist and psychologist. Bridging the two disciplines, her post-doctoral training is in clinical neuropsychology from Drexel University. Dr. Klein holds Supervisory Certification in Special Education from the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Board-Certification as a Specialist in Child Language from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) where she became an ASHA Fellow in 2009. In 2012 she was awarded the state Clinical Achievement Award from the Pennsylvania Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Klein is a recipient of the Lindback Distinguished Teaching Award and the Distinguished Faculty Scholarship Award from La Salle University. At La Salle University, she has been instrumental in co-developing the CASTLE Center (Comprehensive Assessments with Speech Technology for Language Expansion) in connection with the speech-language community clinic.

As a practicing clinician, Dr. Klein continues to assess and treat children, teens, and adults in private practice. Her areas of specialization include selective mutism, autism spectrum disorders, language-learning disabilities, acquired language disorders, stuttering, and counseling for communication disorders. Active in research, Dr. Klein mentors undergraduate and graduate students, presenting at annual conventions, regionally and nationally. Dr. Klein is published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored textbooks and treatment manuals including EXPRESS (Expanding Receptive and Expressive Skills through Stories): Language Formulation for Children with Selective Mutism and Other Communication Needs; More Than Fluency: The Social, Emotional, & Cognitive Dimensions of Stuttering; Acquired Language Disorders: A Case-Based Approach (3rd edition); Hear It! Say It! Learn It!, and others. She is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the national Selective Mutism Association.

Title: Speech-Language Skills in Children with Selective Mutism
This grant supports La Salle University students as they work to better understand selective mutism in children. Assessment practices and methods to further develop pragmatic language skills in children are underway along with dissemination of research.

2014-2018 – Co-Principal Investigator – The Andrew Kukas Training Grant
Established by the Andrew Kukas Foundation to provide training to professionals around the country who are interested in learning about diagnosis and treatment of selective mutism and social anxiety. The first conference was in March, 2016 at Florida International University and second conference was in May, 2018 at American University.

Selective Mutism Research Institute (SMRI) Foundation Grant
Title: The Effects of Social Communication Anxiety Treatment (S-CAT) for Selective Mutism
Experimental study. Children 5 to 12 years diagnosed with selective mutism.
The primary objective was to determine if children with selective mutism receiving the S-CAT Program made significant progress in their social communication at school and in public settings. Outcomes show promise.
