Prerequisites
General Education Courses
We advise all applicants to review the prerequisite course content areas that are related to SLP certification, which ASHA outlines here: Prerequisite Course Content Areas Related to SLP Certification Standards (asha.org).
Specifically, applicants should have college transcript credit (which could include course work, advanced placement, CLEP, or examination of equivalency) for each of the following areas:
- biological sciences
- physical sciences
- social/behavioral sciences
- statistics
Coursework in physical science must include content in either physics or chemistry. If a student matriculates into the MS SLP program without these requirements, the student must complete the missing course/s before the MS is conferred.
Communication Sciences and Disorders Courses
Applicants to our MS SLP program must have demonstrated knowledge in the biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, linguistic, and cultural bases of human communication and swallowing. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to integrate information about normal and abnormal human development across the life span.
We require that students complete the following prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) before the MS is conferred:
- Introduction to Language and Communication
- Phonetics
- Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Hearing Mechanisms
- Speech and Language Development
- Acoustic Bases of Speech and Hearing/Speech Science
- Introduction to Audiology
We require that all applicants to the MS SLP program have taken at least four of the above courses before submitting their initial application to the MS SLP program.
