Bringing into focus the School of Nursing and Health Sciences’ commitment to its Philadelphia community, the La Salle Neighborhood Nursing Center has offered health education and health promotion services for more than 20 years. Staffed by nurses and social workers, the center contributes to local health fairs, offers immunization programs and screenings, and provides information on resources and referrals to connect children, adults, families, and senior citizens with the services they need. The center also provides a dynamic clinical experience for undergraduate and graduate public health nursing students.
Since 1992, the Neighborhood Nursing Center has cared for at-risk families in the community through the Health Intervention Program (HIP), funded by the Philadelphia Department of Health. Through HIP, nurses, social workers, and counselors work with families with children who have special health-care needs, providing home visits, case management services, and referrals to other available resources.
The center also participates in a long-running outreach program, Nursing at the Backstretch, at Philadelphia Park Racetrack in Bensalem, Pa., for uninsured or underinsured migrant racetrack workers. Public health nurses and La Salle undergraduate and graduate nursing students provide immunizations, screenings, and other health-promotion and disease-prevention services.
