The School:
Established in the early 1970s, Deakin University was founded on a progressive educational philosophy. In 1995-6 and again in 1999-2000, Deakin received the University of the Year Award from the Good Universities Guide of Australia. Today, the Deakin system is home to 32,000 students from Australia and across the globe.
The Campus:
Deakin University comprises several campuses in the Australian state of Victoria. Students have the opportunity to study at Deakin’s Burwood campus in Melbourne or an hour away in the coastal town of Geelong. Both campuses offer extensive course offerings each semester in Arts, Business and Law, Health and Behavioral Sciences, and Science and Technology. Each faculty (school) offers courses that will allow students to not only advance their expertise within their major but to also explore the Australian landscape and culture surrounding them. Currently, 12,000 students attend Deakin’s ultra-modern Burwood campus in Melbourne, while 13,000 students pursue degrees at the more traditional Geelong campus.
Campus Surroundings:
Students have the option of either studying in the bustling eastern suburbs of Melbourne or the breezy coastal town of Geelong. The Burwood campus in Melbourne is only a 45-minute tram ride from the city center. Commonly referred to as the “Cultural Capital of Australia” and home to dozens of universities, Melbourne offers arts, culture, and nightlife of a world-class city while being easily accessible to the beach in an hour or other destinations in Australia via plane, train, bus, or car. The Geelong campus appeals more to students who want to study in a cozier University town. Adjacent to campus lies a student village full of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment, and a bit further down the road, students can continue their classroom discussions on the beach with surfboard in hand.
Housing:
La Salle students studying at Deakin are placed in dormitories with other Australian and study abroad students on the Burwood or Geelong campus.
Cost:
Tuition and housing for study at Deakin is the same as La Salle’s tuition rate. Costs such as airfare, meals, personal or incidental expenses, and other travel costs are the student’s responsibility and are not included.
Eligibility:
Applicants must have an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and receive the approval of La Salle University for participation in the program.
