washington_350x350iMilton Washington, ’58, former Chairman and President of Allegheny Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (AHRCO), passed away on Oct. 22, 2016. Washington was a dedicated member of the La Salle community, an active member of the African American Alumni Association, and past Warren E. Smith Award recipient. After graduating from La Salle, Washington served in the U.S. Army Reserve Corp. He worked as a project manager for the Philadelphia Housing Authority, launching his career, serving affordable housing needs of people of modest means—a career that endured for the rest of his life. A generous donor to the University, Washington and his wife, Nancy, endowed a scholarship to provide financial assistance to high-ability students. Washington was active on the boards of many organizations, including the Carnegie Museum of Art, The Extra Mile Education Foundation, and the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. For their contributions to the history of Western Pennsylvania, the Washingtons were honored with the History Makers Award in the field of community service, given by the Senator John Heinz History Center, in 2014. In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by daughters Linda and Lara, along with four grandchildren.
