Stuart M. Smith is the founder and President of Targeted Performance Solutions, LLC (TPS), a management consulting firm of senior level practitioners dedicated to helping organizations enhance performance and bottom-line results and create and sustain their desired culture at the individual, team, and organizational levels.
Stu brings over forty years of experience as a management consultant, senior human resources professional and executive coach. This includes ten years with Ernst & Young as a business effectiveness consultant and change management expert, and eight years as associate national director of human resources for the 50-office professional services firm, Laventhol & Horwath.
Stu’s areas of expertise include (1) executive coaching, leadership & management development; (2) team effectiveness and team optimization, (3) strategic planning, organization structure, process and systems alignment including human capital management; and (4) large-scale change management. He is noted for applying proven techniques to understand each organization’s unique desires, capabilities, constraints, history and culture. He then works collaboratively with senior decision makers to define and target the most appropriate intervention strategies and involves employees throughout the change process.
Stu has provided organizational effectiveness, leadership development and change management consulting (including “C-level” and Board consultation and facilitation) to a broad spectrum of industries including financial and professional services; insurance; healthcare, pharmaceutical and bio-medical; utility/power generation; manufacturing & distribution; technology; education; and government and not for profit. A representative list of organizations includes American Express, JP Morgan, Life Re Insurance of New York, Pennsylvania Department of Health, Holy Cross Health System, Astra Zeneca, Sanofi Pasteur, IBM, Motorola, PPL (Pennsylvania Power & Light), Campbell Soup, Clemens Food Group (Hatfield Quality Meats), the City of Philadelphia, the Federal Government and The White House.
For thirty years, Dr. Smith had been adjunct professor in the Human Resource Development Program of Villanova University’s Graduate School. In 2013, he joined the faculty of La Salle University where he teaches a variety of online
Graduate school courses within the College of Arts & Sciences, and the School of Business. He was also Affiliated Faculty in the Graduate Program for Organizational Dynamics at the University of Pennsylvania. And he served in the Wharton Graduate School Leadership Development Program.
Stu holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior, a Master of Public Health in health planning and evaluation, and a Masters in Individual and Group Psychodynamics each from the University of Pittsburgh. He is also trained in Lean Six Sigma. While with Ernst & Young, he served as change management subject matter expert (SME) and member of the firm’s national organizational change-management (OCM) practitioners planning group. During his tenure at IBM, he was recognized for his collaborative client approach, engagement results and thought leadership by receiving the extra-ordinary teaming award.
Stu is deeply committed to promoting social and professional sustainability. In addition to teaching and guiding professional development, he has held officer, chair or board positions in the United Way, National Adoption Center, University of Pennsylvania, Accountants in the Public Interest, Society for Human Resource Management, and American Society for Training & Development.
