Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) – post-Master’s

  1. Admission Requirements
  2. FAQs

Do I have to find my own chair for my project?

No, you are assigned a DNP team chair and reader from La Salle’s nursing faculty.

What kind of DNP project is required?

You are required to complete a quality improvement initiative or if desired, a research project, on the topic related to your nursing practice experience. There are a variety of project designs that can be used and is determined by your project question. This requires a written paper as well as a presentation.

What does “clinical practicum hours” mean?

All doctoral students are required to complete 500 clinical practicum hours to meet the professional nursing education competencies. You begin your residency courses to complete your clinical practicum hours after the core courses are complete. The clinical practicum hours may be completed with a preceptor at your workplace. You will be building the core competencies for professional nursing education developed by the AACN. Learn more.

What do I have to do to complete the DNP degree at La Salle?

You will complete the core courses and the residency courses, which include 500 clinical practicum hours. You will defend your DNP project proposal and you will defend your final DNP project once it is complete. These defenses require a written paper as well as a live presentation of your project and are completed within your coursework.

How do I determine what topic I want to develop as my DNP project?

You will decide on your topic based on your nursing experience. Your topic should be of interest to you and should be related to a gap in practice that contributes to poor outcomes related to patient care, staffing, or other topics important to nursing practice.

What if I don’t have any ideas for a DNP project?

The DNP courses at La Salle will guide you to develop skills to ask questions and analyze nursing practice, which will lead you to identify areas of concern in your area of nursing expertise.
