Sociology is the scientific study of human groups in modern societies and the social and cultural forces that affect them. The sociological perspective is central to grasping the social and cultural forces that remake our lives on a daily basis. As a very broad major it offers the student a valuable preparation for such varied professions as law, medicine, business, education, politics, social research and public service. Most importantly, perhaps, it helps you cultivate a critical awareness of society, which is essential for survival in today's postmodern society.

Charles A. Gallagher, Ph.D. Professor and Chair gallagher@lasalle.edu My research focuses on racial and social inequality and the ways in which the media, the state and popular culture constructs, shapes and disseminates ideas of race. I’ve published articles on the sociological functions of colorblind political narratives, how racial categories expand and contract within the context of interracial marriages, race theory, racial innumeracy and how one’s ethnic history shapes perceptions of privilege.
