The Associate Degree in Education at La Salle prepares students interested in a pathway to teaching. The program provides theoretical foundations in education, principles of child and adolescent growth and development as well as curricula development, lesson planning, and observation. Educational psychology, and fundamentals of reading, math, science, and social studies education are also addressed. The associate in education provides a seamless pathway into the teacher certification programs at La Salle.
La Salle’s Associate in Education program prioritizes culturally relevant and sustaining education in preparing educators to work with learners from culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Students have the option of entering the workforce in a non-licensed position or transferring into a baccalaureate program in La Salle’s Education Department. Students continuing at La Salle will transfer directly into the program as a teacher candidate prepared to begin junior-level coursework provided all clearance, GPA, state testing, and field work requirements are met.
Education faculty at La Salle are innovative and involved in educational research and practice at the local, national, and international levels. A few examples include, Dr. Laurel Byrne who is our resident early childhood expert who grounds her classes in research-based experiential learning and play. Dr. McLaurin is our expert in Special Education and Disability studies, preparing our students to work in inclusive environments that focus on asset-based approaches. Dr. Laura Roy brings expertise in culturally relevant and sustaining education and working with English language learners in the classroom.
Students in this program are prepared to work in non-licensed positions in education, including after-school programs, early childhood centers, non-profit organizations, and support positions in schools. Students can add an additional 60 credits to seamlessly complete a PDE certification program.
