What can I do with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work?

1. Get an M.S.W. (Master in Social Work) in one instead of two years!

Through the Advanced Standing option, students who meet the required grade point average and who choose to go to a graduate school that offers Advanced Standing can obtain an M.S.W. in twelve months. The M.S.W. opens up tremendous possibilities--work in settings with various populations, such as children, older persons, or people with substance abuse problems; work with individuals, groups, families, organizations, or communities. The M.S.W. may choose to practice in industry, a social service agency, the political arena, or to establish a private practice. The M.S.W. may be an elected official (Senator Barbara Mikulski (D), Maryland, for example).

2. Get a job!

B.S.W. social workers are in demand! Faced with an aging society as well as an increase in social problems, such as child abuse, society is searching for answers and people with skills to address these challenges. Social workers have the knowledge, skills, and value base needed for the 21st century challenges facing all societies. The La Salle University Social Work Program's experience is that our B.S.W.s have their pick of jobs. Many, however, go on to graduate school. Bilingual social workers are especially in demand. Many employers prefer the B.S.W. because they know this student has had grounding in the knowledge base, skills, and values of the social work profession.
