internships

A hallmark of our Social Work Program is the extensive field internships completed by our students. Our social work majors complete over 600 field internship hours which prepares them for generalist social work practice and/or graduate studies in social work.

In their first social work course, Introduction to Social Work (SWK 160), students engage in a 40-hour volunteer service learning experience at a local human service agency. During the Human Behavior and Social Environment courses (SWK 280 and SWK 281), students participate in service- learning opportunities that assist them in integrating course material and in observing first hand how theory learned in the classroom impacts social work practice with clients. Students complete their volunteer and service-learning experiences in a variety of settings including after-school programs, soup kitchens, hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers and other social service agencies.

The formal field internships occur in the second semester of junior year, when students complete 200 hours of fieldwork and in both semesters of the senior year when students complete a total of 400 hours of fieldwork. Students typically work in their field internships two days per week each semester. Students are supervised by a professional social worker and work directly with clients and the staff of the agency in which they are placed. The Field Practicum Coordinator meets with students to facilitate the process of securing an appropriate field internship site.
