Social Work Student Organization
All social
work majors and other interested students are eligible for membership in the Social
Work Student Association. Students determine projects and activities; in the past,
the Association has raised funds for community service projects, hosted a Christmas
party for teenagers in residential placement, and had guest speakers regarding
various aspects of social work.
Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society
Social work majors who are juniors or seniors and who attain the required grade
point average are eligible for induction into Phi Alpha, the national social
work honor society, Lambda Zeta Chapter. Student members of Phi Alpha select
their own activities, which have included a campus-wide toiletries driveservice
activity to benefit clients of numerous community-based agencies in the La Salle
University area.
Student Faculty Committee
The purpose of the Student-Faculty Committee is to provide an avenue for discussion
about the Social Work Program, to provide a feedback loop to both students and
faculty, and to serve as a forum for emerging issues in the Social Work Program.
The committee includes representatives from the sophomore, junior, and senior
day and evening classes. The committee meets monthly with program faculty.
Social Work Advisory Board
La Salle University is fortunate to have a Social Work Advisory Board, comprised
of social work practitioners, alumnae, social work faculty, students, and key
people within the University who relate to the Social Work Program. The Advisory
Board awards the Sister Ruth Mahar, D.C. Grace & Grit Award annually to a social
work student who is a single parent and who exemplifies the balance required
to carry out family responsibilities and also demonstrate academic scholarship.
The Advisory Board supports all aspects of the Social Work Program, and also
sponsors events of their own, such as continuing education forums for licensed
social workers as well as social work students.
