What is the difference between the M.A. in Education and the M.A. with Certification programs?

The M.A. in Education is a non-certification program designed for educators and professionals looking to deepen their knowledge of teaching and learning. It is ideal for those already certified or working in educational settings that do not require state certification.

In contrast, our M.A. with Certification programs are designed for individuals seeking initial Pennsylvania teacher certification in areas such as Elementary, Secondary, Middle Level, or Special Education. These programs include coursework and clinical field experiences aligned with state certification requirements.

Are your programs aligned with the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) standards?

Yes. All of La Salle’s certification programs are fully aligned with PDE standards and include the required competencies in areas such as structured literacy, assessment, differentiated instruction, and culturally responsive pedagogy.

How many credits are required for each program?

Credit requirements vary by program:

  • M.A. in Education – 30 credits
  • M.A. with Elementary Education Certification – 48 credits
  • M.A. with Elementary and Special Education Certifications – 51 credits
  • M.A. with Middle Level Certification – 45 credits
  • M.A. with Secondary Education Certification – 36 credits
  • M.A. with Special Education Certification – 33 credits

*Each of these programs can also be completed without an M.A. for fewer credits.

Is there a student teaching or practicum component?

Yes. All initial certification programs include a student teaching semester or clinical practicum, during which students work full-time in a school setting under the guidance of a cooperating teacher and university supervisor. Non-certification programs may also include field-based projects or action research components, depending on the focus area.

Can I complete the program while working full-time?

Many of our courses are offered in the evenings, online, or in hybrid formats, making it possible for students to work full-time while pursuing their degree. However, the student teaching or practicum semester typically requires full-time commitment during school hours.

Are courses focused on the Science of Reading and structured literacy?

Yes. Courses in our certification programs include a strong emphasis on the Science of Reading, structured literacy practices, and evidence-based reading interventions, in alignment with PDE expectations and national best practices.

Do you offer electives or specialization tracks within the programs?

The M.A. in Education offers some flexibility for students to choose electives based on their interests, such as instructional coaching, curriculum development, or culturally responsive teaching. Certification programs are more prescribed due to state requirements, but some customization may be possible depending on student goals.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Program length depends on the student’s course load and the specific program selected. Most students complete their degree in 2–3 years part-time. Full-time options may allow for faster completion.
